robodan

robodan helps automate media requests from friends and family, while keeping me out of the critical path, and without exposing any services to the internet.

We use shared accounts at letterboxd (movies) and serializd (TV), and add items to the watchlist on each site.

robodan polls the movie and TV watchlists, adds new items to radarr and sonarr, and notifies me via ntfy with the pass / fail results.

Prior Art

  • Omni / Overseerr / Jellyseerr / Seerr - overkill for my purposes and require exposing services to the internet
  • Trakt - considered as a single source of shared account watchlist truth, but I don't like its interface

Notes

  • both letterboxd and serializd are excellent websites for search and discovery, not enshittified like IMDB
  • for movies, letterboxd and radarr use imdb_id as the intermediary for identifying a movie
  • TV was trickier due to
    • serializd using TMDB ids for both shows and seasons
    • pyarr using the older sonarr V3 API which only supports TVDB
    • sonarr not searching for newly-monitored seasons that aired in the past, requiring a core SeasonSearch command for each monitored series
  • text files are used to persist lists of processed movies and TV shows
    • letterboxd includes the movie slug, which is ideal for the movie history list
    • serializd updates a dateAdded field whenever the monitored seasons are changed. This timestamp is included in the TV history list.
